Martin Luther King Jr. Relaxing in the Gazebo

This page is part of my 1999 entry for an international competition for the design of the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial in Washington, DC.

I envisioned the Reverend Doctor Martin Luther King Jr. relaxing, as a man, as a friend, approachable, touchable. This life-size, bronze statue of Martin relaxing on a park bench, inviting us to sit beside him, gives him a down-to-earth, human touchability.

This is the man who toughed it out, sweated the details, walked the line, spent lonely nights in jail for his vision of freedom and justice. His vision for us all!
