Mei Long, Sound Sleeping Dragon

A setting sun flickers through the trees
In waning blue, the edges of light
Bent to golden hue, an evening bright,
As darkness liquors an offshore breeze

In sunset colors like island seas,
We are not new. Flapping wings in flight
For a few who flew away in fright
From the mauler’s fangs, there is no please

Or thank you. We live and die at ease
And carry through the ages a fight
That defies clue. Mei long, a delight
To find you existed. A nap frees

From China’s dominion to appease
Sound Sleeping Dragon, history that sees.

Mei long is a newly discovered fossil unearthed in China in its entirety, sleeping peacefully.
